Goochland Gladiators - For Love of the Sport

Flag football players do it for love of the sport

Players of all levels play the game for fun

Chuck Barnes had not played football since his days as a running back for the Goochland Bulldogs in the mid-eighties, but through the years he has remained a big fan of the sport.

Upon getting the itch to play again, the 42-year-old Goochland resident found out about the Weekend Warrior Flag Football Association through an online search.

Back-up quarterback Mike Lackey, left, who was a walk-on at Ohio State, scrambles for more yardage in the Monday night game.

Noticing many teams and players from surrounding areas but few from Goochland, he decided to put together his own team and began posting notices around town to recruit players. Response was good, and the Goochland Gladiators became a reality in the spring of 2008.

“I found out about it when I saw a flyer that Chuck had put up in the Goochland Food Lion,” James Walker said.

The semi-contact men’s flag team plays in the WWFFA’s Henrico division, and offers an organized and affordable way for newcomers and experienced players alike to get together for a little weekly fun and gridiron competition.

“It’s a dream come true,” Walker added. “I had never played organized sports, and I don’t have a whole lot of athletic prowess, but it’s a real thrill for me. Both of my brothers played high school ball, and they play on our team too.”

Skill level on the squad ranges from beginners to guys with high school or even college-level experience. Receiver Mike Lackey was a walk-on at Ohio State.

Regardless of age, race, shape or size, the common goal is fun, respect and camaraderie.

“Sometimes we’ll get mad at each other out here, but it’s all in good fun,” Barnes said.

The goodwill extends to game officials as well.

“There are three to four referees per game, and they’re very helpful. Sometimes tell even us what we’re doing wrong,” Barnes added.

After huddling for a prayer before each game, the Gladiators take to the field at Crestview Elementary School for 60 run-clock minutes of eight-on-eight competition with a brief halftime break.

Rules peculiar to flag football competition include no downfield blocking, no “shielding” or covering of the flag, and of course no tackling or excessive contact. Passing plays are the most common, with quarterback-keepers close behind. Set running backs are rarely used to carry the ball.

The Gladiators’ performance has been streaky this season. They followed an 0-2 start with a dominant two-game winning streak, and now find themselves 2-4 with two regular season games remaining. With the two wins coming from within their division, the team is guaranteed at least one post-season game.

“We did practice some during the summer, but it was difficult with everybody’s different schedules,” Walker said. “So realistically, our first two games were really kind of like practices.”

Unlike the second-season Gladiators, many teams in the league have played together for years. Players with considerable flag experience, such as Reggie Anlowe, have accelerated the young team’s learning curve while they play.

The Fall season will conclude soon, with playoffs beginning in late November. The Gladiators hope to hit their stride at the right time.

Spring season will be here before you know it. For those interested in tryout information, contact Chuck Barnes at 804-370-7735.

Bowler's love of football: 24/7

James River graduate Terrence "T.C." Bowler plays on two flag football teams and for the Virginia Hornets of the East Coast semipro football league. Looking for an alternate source of fuel? Just hitch your wagon to Terrence "T.C." Bowler, and you're likely to go, go, go.

Bowler's day job is inspecting gas pumps for Baird Petroleum.

Meanwhile, his personal energy tank always is brimming over.

The former James River High athlete (Class of 2002) can stake claim to being the most gung-ho football player in town. The 6-1 190-pounder suits up for two flag football squads and also with the Virginia Hornets.

"Any chance to play football, I'll jump for it," he said.

Busy, busy: Bowler's pigskin calendar looks like this:

·  Monday and/or Wednesday nights: star wide receiver/defensive back for Primetime in the Crestview flag football league.

·  Sundays: similar role for Weekend Warrior League flag football powerhouse D-Mob at Ruffin Road Playground.

·  Saturdays: free safety for 6-1 Hornets of the East Coast semipro football league with home games at Armstrong High School.

·  Tuesdays and Thursdays: Hornets practices at Westover Elementary School.

"The toughest part," Bowler said, "is remembering the rules. There's not much contact in flag. With the Hornets, I've got to remember they'll hit you."

Quickly, he amended that statement: "No, the toughest part is really getting up Sunday morning when you're sore and just want to lay in bed."

This is Bowler's second year with the Hornets.

Background check: Bowler earned all-Dominion District honors at James River as a defensive back and kick returner.

He attended Ferrum and Saint Paul colleges with the idea of playing football but never did.

"I had a lot of maturing to do," he said.

Bowler is quick to inject his "pride and joy" into any conversation.

"My son [Tai] is my father's day gift, every day of the year," he said of his son. Tai's mother is Sara Yentes.

Sandlot: Bowler began playing Sunday pickup games at Monacan High School. That's where he met Joe Sanders, who now coaches and plays for Primetime and plays for D-Mob.

"We played 11 on 11, full contact, no gear," Sanders said. "T.C. was killing people."

Sanders added, "T.C. ought to be playing college ball now."

Primetime: You guessed it - the flag squad was named after Sanders' favorite football player, Deion Sanders.

Primetime was undefeated in the Crestview spring league and has been to four straight fall-league championship games, winning twice.

D-Mob: This perennial power won the U.S. Flag Football Association title in 2006, advanced to the semifinals last year and will compete in this year's nationals in Morgantown, W.Va., in December.

Bowler and Sanders go back and forth between Primetime and D-Mob. Both will compete at the state tournament, but possibly in different divisions.

Slogan: Coach Cliff Jefferson's Hornets speak for all adult football with their inspiring motto, "We don't stop playing because we grow old. We grow old because we stop playing."

Bears have acquired talent from all over the state for game with semipro squad

Tomorrow is one day the Virginia State Police will have to leave their radar guns behind.

No speeding tickets will be handed out, regardless how fast Virginia Hornets receivers run fly patterns in a flag football game.

With Special Olympics as the beneficiary, a team of state police, called the Bears, will meet the semipro Hornets at 1 p.m. at Highland Springs High. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for under 12.

"We're doing it for a good cause, but obviously we still want to win," said special agent Michael Jenkins, who figures to be the Bears' quarterback.

Jenkins has recruited state police from the far corners of the state who have been practicing at headquarters on Midlothian Turnpike.

"Mostly, it's area men," he said. "But we've got them coming from Northern Virginia, Virginia Beach . . . all over."

Jenkins, a former Hermitage High (Class of 2000) player, says his roster includes "a lieutenant, first sergeant, three sergeants . . . even a dispatcher."

The Bears' roster includes John Rehme, who played at Virginia Tech from 1989-91. Coached by Perk Jefferson (Thomas Dale, Class of '78), the Hornets were 18-3 last year in the Eastern Football Alliance.

While saying, "It's all in fun," Jefferson added, "We're coming full force. We're bring the fast receivers and defensive backs, and the big guys, too. This is the 300-pound guys' chance to catch a pass."

In eight-on-eight flag football, everyone is an eligible receiver. Almost every play involves a pass. There is no downfield blocking. Still, the action can get heated along the line of scrimmage.

The Hornets would seem to be younger, bigger and faster, but Jefferson doesn't expect a cakewalk.

"From what I hear, they've been recruiting the top athletes from all over Virginia," he said.

Jefferson said his team has one regret about tomorrow's ground rules.

"A lot of our guys say they'd like to put on the pads and play real tackle," he said. "That way they could get revenge."

Jefferson said the more physical the game, the better his side will like it.

"We won't be crying 'police brutality,'" he said with a laugh.
